Not only you get a sleek grill in the car but an amazing exterior design too. You can speed up the car on highways, listen to music and even relax in this luxury suv car by MG.
The Hector, though, strikes a healthy middle ground. Moreover, it offers an unmatched technology package with no compromise on daily use. In addition, the interior quality isn’t as luxurious as we’d hoped but it’s still well made and tastefully designed. It’s also important to note that even the base variant is well-equipped with no silly compromises to get a namesake starting price. And, yet, the MG Hector is priced very aggressively. At Rs 12.18 lakh for the base Style petrol manual and Rs 16.88 lakh for the top-spec Hector Sharp diesel manual, the MG Hector offers fantastic value for money and is indeed worth its price.
MG Motor has announced that it will officially start accepting bookings for the Hector on 4 June. The Hector’s prices will also be announced in the same month.
MG Hector Variants
The MG Hector will be launched in 4 variants-
Both the petrol and diesel engines will be on offer across the variant lineup with the manual transmission option. Only the petrol engine will be available with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, that too in the top two variants- Smart and Sharp. MG will offer a 48V mild hybrid system with the Hector’s petrol engine in all variants apart from the ‘Style’ Variant.
The petrol engine will reportedly return 14.16kmpl with the manual transmission and 13.96kmpl with the automatic transmission. MG also said that the 48V mild hybrid setup can increase the fuel economy up to 12 per cent. So we can expect the Hector hybrid to deliver somewhere around 15.5kmpl. And for the diesel one, the fuel efficiency figure mentioned is 17.41kmpl.
MG Hector’s expected price in India
We expect the base prices of hector to start around Rs. 15 Lakh.
MG Hector’s rivals
MG Hector is a five-seater, mid-size SUV vehicle and competes with the likes of the Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass, Mahindra XUV500 and the Hyundai Tucson. The Hector is the longest car in the segment. It also has the longest wheelbase at 2750mm. The MG Hector has a boot space of 587 litres, the largest in the segment.
MG Hector Exterior
For one, it has size on its side. At 4655mm in length with a height of 1760mm, it does have a big edge over its rivals like the Tata Harrier and Jeep Compass. Moreover, It also has a 2750mm long wheelbase, which is pretty cool. Combine this size with the standard skid plates and roof rails, and the Hector clearly flexes its presence on the road.
The 17-inch wheels are certainly optimized for India but under an SUV as tall as the Hector, they look a little small, especially when you see the large wheel well gaps. Even the overhangs bulge out on either end, lending an MPV element to this SUV. We expect more additions from MG-Cars in the near future.
MH Hector 2019 Interior and Features
No doubt about the details on the interior side. This car is purely designed to comfort the passenger both in the front side and the back side. You will get to enjoy
The Hector’s standout feature is its large 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which won’t be available in all variants. Moreover, There will be features like in-built internet connectivity, iSmart mobile application-based AC control as well as door lock and door unlock. However, The mid sized-SUV vehicle will also offer a panoramic sunroof, a semi-digital instrument cluster with a 7-inch colour display and up to six airbags. The standard set of safety features include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, traction control, rear disc brakes, hill hold assist and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
The cabin is indeed spacious, and what more can you expect SUV that will cost around Rs 15 lakh-20 lakh on road? With the driver’s seat set for someone who’s 6.5ft tall, there’s still a good amount of knee room to spare. You also get good headroom for tall users and adequate space to tuck your feet in under the front seats.
There’s a big gap to find underneath the boot floor and this is where we expect the spare tyre. Instead, you get a storage space below the boot floor which shares its home with the tyre removal kit and the subwoofer. Cool, right? It’s a spot big enough to hold a car cover, car cleaning kit or tyre inflator i.e. items you’d want to keep separate from your actual bags/groceries.

MG Hector Powertrain
Moreover, MG Hector will be available with both petrol and the diesel engine options. Moreover, both the engines will be available with a manual transmission. MG is likely to offer an automatic transmission with the petrol engine. Both the engines are expected to be available across their variants. The petrol engine will be available with a 48V mild-hybrid setup too which is amazing.
The petrol engine will be a 1.5-litre, turbo-charged unit capable of producing 143PS of maximum power. However, the diesel engine will be the same 2.0-litre unit that powers the Jeep Compass. Here, it produces 170PS of maximum power. While not confirmed, a leaked document suggests that the petrol-powered Hector will return a mileage of 14.16kmpl with the manual one and 13.96kmpl with the dual-clutch automatic one. The diesel Hector, on the other hand, is expected to deliver 17.41kmpl mileage. Know more here by Cardekho.
It’s also a better choice for extensive highway usage. It feels more relaxing to drive past 100kmph, while offering more grunt for overtakes and better efficiency. Where it trails the petrol hybrid is refinement. Moreover, the engine noise is audible too. Then the throttle response isn’t as progressive and there is a sudden surge of performance when the turbocharger engages. The Hector offers more excitement, it doesn’t build power as progressively as the petrol. Finally, the clutch action isn’t as smooth as the petrol. Not only is it heavier, the bite is also jerky while moving from a standstill and you can stall the transmission if you aren’t careful.
